Kayla Thornton family

The 31-year-old Power Forward Kayla Thornton plays for the New York Liberty in the WNBA as of September 2024. Thornton played high school basketball at Irvin High School, where she set the school record with 1,953 points and grabbed 884 rebounds. She was also named the 1-4A Female Athlete of the Year by the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame in the 2009-10 season. At the University of Texas, she became the 9th all-time leading scorer in program history, scoring 1,016 points. She was one of only three players in the college’s history to achieve at least 800 points, 100 steals, and 600 rebounds. Despite going undrafted in the 2014 WNBA Draft, Thornton was signed by the Washington Mystics in 2015, marking the start of her professional career in the WNBA.

In addition to her WNBA career, Thornton has played overseas, most notably with the Cheongju KB Stars in the Women's Korean Basketball League (WKBL). In 2019, she led the team to a championship and earned the title of WKBL MVP. During the 2024 WNBA season, Thornton is playing as a backup forward for Liberty and averages 5.5 points, 0.7 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game (as of September 20, 2024).
