D’Lo or D’Angelo Russell was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers as the second overall pick in the 2015 draft. He started off very weird, as early on Russell was involved more in the non-basketball side of things than he was on the court. He had allegedly posted a video of Nick Young (his former teammate) admitting to cheating on his then-girlfriend, Iggy Azalea. This led to chemistry issues for the Lakers and the team was already losing most of the games.
After spending two seasons with the Lakers, Russell started playing for the Brooklyn Nets and that is where he became a star. He had an All-Star year with the Nets and led them to the playoffs where they lost to the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the playoffs. Russell’s future was looking solid and the Nets’ then-coach Kenny Atkinson couldn’t have had a better season. However, when Durant and Irving decided to team up in Brooklyn, Russell was traded to the Golden State Warriors.
After Russell left Brooklyn, he has been a great contributor throughout the years but never retained his all-star form. Despite all the challenges he has faced, Russell has maintained steady averages in his career with 17.7 points, 5.7 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game. He can handle the ball well, create plenty of looks for his teammates, create separation with his ball-handling, and can score from multiple spots on the floor.
Russell is currently playing for the L.A. Lakers and has been a great help to the squad. He helped the Lakers reach to the Western Conference Semifinals last season and has continued to look good this season.
D’Angelo Russell Career Turnover Average
Russell averages 2.8 turnovers per game in his career. While he does make mistakes at times, his production from the field is what keeps him within the rotation. He has one of the smoothest games in the NBA and has no problem scoring the basketball from all three levels. He has been a steady presence on the offensive end for the Lakers and is averaging 17.4 points, 6.2 assists, and 3.5 rebounds while shooting at 46.7 per cent from the field and 37.8 per cent from the three-point line.
After a disappointing end to their playoff journey last season, The Lakers are currently looking forward to getting back to the conference finals and beating the Denver Nuggets this time. Russell, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Malik Beasley all joined the team last season. The Lakers were struggling to win ball games but Russell and the others have helped turn things around for the franchise.
Russell still has time to improve his game when it comes to his consistency on the field. He can be a streaky shooter at times and can turn the ball over quite a lot. Despite his flaws, the upside to Russell’s game is tremendous and he is currently the Lakers’ starting point guard.
