D'Angelo Russel is an American professional basketball player born on February 23, 1996, in Louisville, Kentucky, United States. He was drafted as the second overall pick by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2015 NBA draft and currently plays as a point guard for the same team.


Before declaring for the 2015 NBA draft, D’Angelo got to play in the McDonald’s All-American Game in 2014. Throughout his NBA career, D’Angelo received many honours, including the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2016, NBA All-Star in 2019 and so on.

D’Angelo Russell’s Early Life

D’Angelo Russell was born on February 23, 1996, in Louisville, Kentucky, to his father, Antonio Russel and his mother, Keisha Rowe. He has a strong bond with his parents, who always inspired him to give his best to sports. D’Angelo has four siblings named Antonio, Lashaun, Tayshaun, and Cloee.


His brothers (Antonio and LeShawn) played a vital role in shaping his career as a basketball player, as they always had a competitive relationship. LeShawn was not much involved in sports and always had competitive battles with his brothers, Antonio and D’Angelo, regarding sports.


D’Angelo Russell’s Education

D’Angelo was admitted at the Central High School in his hometown (Louisville, Kentucky) in 2010. Later, in his second year, he was transferred to the Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida. He led his school team to win many High School National Tournament championships in 2014. Later, D’Angelo participated in the 2014 McDonald’s All-American Boys Game and Jordan Brand Classic.


On June 7, 2013, D’Angelo decided to play college basketball for Ohio State, and was rated as a five-star recruit by Rivals.com. He played college basketball for only one season. During his college career, he recorded a career-high 14 rebounds on January 9, 2015, in a match against the Maryland. D’Angelo became the first freshman in Ohio State history to score a triple-double with 23 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds.


During College, D’Angelo earned many rewards, including the Jerry West Award, First-Team All-American, First-Team All-Big Ten and Big Ten Freshman of the Year. D’Angelo ended the 2014-15 season with Ohio State, averaging 19.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 5 assists in a total of 35 games. In April 2015, D’Angelo left his college and declared for the 2015 NBA draft on April 22.


D’Angelo Russell’s NBA Journey


Los Angeles Lakers

D’Angelo started his NBA career after being selected by the Los Angeles Lakers on June 25, 2015, as the second overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft. In a match against the Atlanta Hawks on December 4, D’Angelo recorded his first career double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds. He participated in the 2016 Rising Stars Challenge and scored 22 points and seven assists in Team USA’s victory over Team World. At the end of the 2015-16 season, he was rewarded with the NBA All-Rookie Second Team award, and he was the youngest player to hit 130 three-pointers in a season.


The following season, D’Angelo debuted for the Lakers on October 26, 2016, grabbing 20 points in a match against the Houston Rockets. Unfortunately, he missed many championships due to knee and calf injuries from November to January. After proper treatment, D’Angelo returned to the court on January 31 and recorded his second career double-double with 22 points. He recorded a career-high 40 points in a 125-120 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on March 19.


Brooklyn Nets

After two seasons with the Lakers, D’Angelo was traded to the Brooklyn Nets on June 22, 2017. In his first match for the Brooklyn Nets, D’Angelo scored 30 points. Following an arthroscopic surgery on November 17 on his left knee, he was ruled out indefinitely. He missed 32 games of the season and made his return on January 19. On January 31, D’Angelo had his best performance since knee surgery, scoring 22 points in a 116-108 win over the Philadelphia 76ers. On March 23, D’Angelo notched his first career triple-double in a game against the Toronto Raptors, finishing with 18 points, 13 assists, and 11 rebounds in a 116-112 defeat.


In November 2018, D’Angelo recorded a career-high nine three-pointers in a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was regarded as the Eastern Conference Player of the Week due to his outstanding performance in the games played from January 14 to January 20. D’Angelo was selected to play in the National Basketball Association All-Star Game as a replacement for the injured All-Star Victor Oladipo.


The Brooklyn Nets finished the regular season, securing the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference with a 42-40 record. On June 28, 2019, the Brooklyn Nets made D’Angelo a restricted free agent by offering him a qualifying offer.


Golden State Warriors

On July 7, 2019, D’Angelo Russell, along with Shabazz Napier and Treveon Graham, was traded to the Golden State Warriors. He averaged a career-high 23.6 points per game during his season with the Golden State Warriors.


Minnesota Timberwolves

On February 6, 2020, the Minnesota Timberwolves acquired D’Angelo Russel, along with Jacob Evans and Omari Spellman, through a trade. On February 10, he participated in his first match for the team against the Toronto Raptors. In 2021, the Minnesota Timberwolves was fined $25,000 for violating the NBA’s policy against resting healthy players.
