Max Johnson embarked on his collegiate football journey with the LSU Tigers over offers from Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Michigan State, North Carolina, and Texas A&M among others in 2020. After two seasons with the Tigers, Johnson ended his LSU career connecting on 313-of-523 passes for 3,883 yards, 35 touchdowns, and seven interceptions and entered the NCAA transfer portal in 2021. He transferred to the Texas A&M for the next two seasons where he redshirted in his first season with the Aggies in 2022. In 2023 as a junior, Johnson saw action in eight games, throwing 1,452 yards and nine touchdowns against five interceptions before entering the transfer portal for the second time. Johnson joined the North Carolina Tar Heels for the 2024 season with two years of eligibility remaining.
