Jos Buttler hit a blistering 41-ball 67 as Sydney Thunder routed Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League.

Buttler found the rope five times throughout and cleared it four times in a single over to help the Thunder to a total of 166-5.

It was an exhibition of big hitting rarely seen at the University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston, primarily used for Australian Rules Football, and was a display the hosts never looked like replicating.

Alex Doolan (34) top scored for the Hurricanes, but wickets fell at regular intervals, Fawad Ahmed and Arjun Nair the pick of the bowlers as Hobart were dismissed for 109.

The Thunder's 57-run win was their second in the first four games of the season, while the Hurricans are winless in two matches.

The game turned in the Thunder's favour in the 12th over as Buttler exploded into life, clobbering Thomas Rogers for four sixes, including one off a no-ball.

The over went for 28 runs and provided the foundation for a respectable Thunder total.

After Buttler's exit, Shane Watson (41) was comically run out, but Callum Ferguson's unbeaten 24 pushed Sydney past 160.

Sadly for the impressive home crowd in Launceston, Hobart's reply never really got going.

And it was spinners Ahmed and Nair who took the key wickets.

Ahmed removed captain George Bailey (3) and Cameron Boyce (0) either side of Matthew Wade (2) being caught and bowled by Nair.

Nair then drew a slice out of Doolan to end his innings and any hope of the Hurricanes mounting a recovery.
