Ponting takes on Daredevils role for 2018 IPL
Delhi Daredevils have a new coach for the 2018 IPL in the form of Australia great Ricky Ponting.
Australia legend Ricky Ponting has been confirmed as the coach of Delhi Daredevils for the 2018 Indian Premier League.
The former Aussie skipper previously oversaw Mumbai Indians in a two-year stint, guiding the franchise to the IPL title in 2015.
Confirming the news on Twitter, the Daredevils posted: "We are glad to announce our new head coach for IPL 2018 and it is none other than the legend, Ricky Ponting."
The Daredevils finished sixth 12 months ago, winning six of their 14 games in the tournament.
Ponting's decision to take on the Daredevils challenge is likely to only exacerbate reports that he is in line to coach Australia's Twenty20 side.
Earlier this week Ponting confirmed that he had held talks with Cricket Australia to get involved with the Baggy Greens' set-up, but denied that a deal was in place for him to coach the team at the next ICC World Twenty20 in 2020.
"I've had discussions with Cricket Australia for a long time about getting involved somewhere in some way shape or form," he told Network Ten during their coverage of the Big Bash League.
"I love coaching, I love being able to give a little bit back into the game.
"Obviously working and commentating on the Big Bash gives me an opportunity to see all the players and keep up with the tactics and the skills that are coming into the game now.
"I've been talking to them [Cricket Australia] and I'll continue to talk with them.
"I would like to get involved somewhere if it works out that way, but certainly nothing has been decided as yet.
"If everything does line up, there's a lot of things to think about.
"There's tournaments all over the world at different times, is it going to interfere with things I've already got locked in which I'm obviously enjoying."
