Cale Makar is a Canadian professional ice hockey player and as of January 2025, he plays as a defenseman for the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Avalanche selected him as the fourth overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. In 2018, Makar joined Canada's under-20 team for the World Junior Championships in Buffalo, where he won gold and led all defensemen in scoring. Despite being invited to the Canadian senior team for the 2018 Winter Olympics, he declined to focus on his commitments at UMass.
After completing two seasons in the NCAA with the UMass Minutemen, Makar transitioned to the NHL during the 2019–20 season, making an immediate impact and earning the Calder Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year.
