After completing two seasons in the NCAA with the UMass Minutemen, Makar transitioned to the NHL during the 2019–20 season, making an immediate impact and earning the Calder Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year. His outstanding performance continued in his second professional season, leading to a nomination for the James Norris Memorial Trophy in recognition of the league's best defenseman. Makar clinched the Norris Trophy in the subsequent 2021–22 season. In 2022, he played a pivotal role in the Avalanche's Stanley Cup victory and was honored with the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the 2022 playoffs.
