MI History

Legendary Indian player Sachin Tendulkar was the marquee pick for the Mumbai Indians as the player hailed from the country’s financial capital city. Tendulkar was the first captain of Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2008. Mumbai Indians are the most successful team in the history of the Indian Premier League with five titles in 15 seasons. The team is based in Mumbai and owned by Reliance Industries. It plays its home matches in IPL at the Wankhede Stadium.

Let’s take a look at the detailed journey of the five-time IPL winners year-wise.

2008

first-MI-XI.jpg (485×272)

Tendulkar missed the first seven matches for Mumbai Indians in the inaugural season of the IPL due to a groin injury. Harbhajan Singh and Shaun Pollock also shared the captaincy duties in seven games in Tendulkar’s absence. Mumbai Indians squad was highlighted by the presence of Robin Uthappa, Dwayne Bravo, Sanath Jayasuriya, Abhishek Nayar, Ashwell Prince, Ajinkya Rahane and Ashish Nehra.

Mumbai Indians finished fifth in the points table with seven wins and seven defeats. Jayasuriya scored the most runs (518) for the team and Nehra picked the most wickets (12) in the first season of IPL in 2008.

2009

Mumbai-Indians-12.jpg (600×409)

Mumbai Indians could manage only five wins in 14 matches in the second season under Tendulkar. They ended up seventh on the points table with 11 points. JP Duminy was the highest run-scorer of the team with 372 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 114.46. Lasith Malinga, who played his first IPL season for MI, returned as their highest wicket-taker with 18 dismissals in 13 games.

2010

212d7-15575844544133-800.jpg (700×466)

Tendulkar led from the front in the third season of the IPL as he amassed 618 runs in 15 innings with five half-centuries. Mumbai Indians topped the points table with 10 victories in 14 matches. They thrashed Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the semi-final by 35 runs. Mumbai Indians ended as runners-up in the IPL 2010 after a 22-run loss to MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final.

2011

700_1_095211_235210_7891.jpg (700×560)

A resurgent Mumbai Indians under Tendulkar was set to aim higher after they purchased the likes of Rohit Sharma, Andrew Symonds and Tirumalasetti Suman. All three players were released by now-defunct Deccan Chargers. Munaf Patel joined to boost the pace attack with Lasith Malinga after Zaheer Khan moved to RCB in that edition.

MI was placed third on the points table with nine wins and five defeats. They won against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Eliminator round but went down to RCB by 43 runs in the Qualifier 2 to end their campaign. With 553 runs in 16 games, Tendulkar finished as the team’s highest run-getter and Lasith Malinga (28) as the highest wicket-taker.

2012

Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh took over the captaincy baton from Tendulkar after leading them to the title in 2011 Champions League T20 competition. Mumbai won 10 out of their 16 fixtures in the league stage of IPL 2012. They were eliminated by CSK in the playoffs.

2013

mumbai-indians-ipl-2013-winners-4.jpg (720×427)

Australian great Ricky Ponting was appointed as the new captain of the franchise in the sixth season. After six games in the start of the season, Ponting stepped down from the captaincy role owing to poor form with the bat. Local boy Rohit Sharma was elevated to the leadership role.

MI levelled with CSK on the points table with 11 wins in 16 matches. Even though CSK thumped them by 48 runs in the Qualifier 1, MI bounced back with first defeating Rajasthan Royals in the Qualifier 2 and later outplayed CSK in the final by 23 runs to clinch their maiden IPL title. Rohit Sharma (538 runs in 19 matches) and Harbhajan Singh (24 wickets in 19 matches) were the leading run-scorer and wicket-taker of the team respectively.

2014

mumbai_650_041114045546.jpg (650×409)

Mumbai Indians qualified to the playoffs of 2014 thanks to the blitzkrieg from New Zealand’s Corey Anderson (95 not out from 44 balls) and a six from Aditya Tare helped them to chase 190 in 14.4 overs against Rajasthan Royals and seal their qualification spot by leapfrogging RR in the fourth place on the points table on a superior net run rate. However, MI lost to MS Dhoni’s CSK by seven wickets in the Eliminator match and their hopes vanished to defend the title.

2015

zXZecmRRh7.jpg (1200×514)

Mumbai Indians lost five out of their first six games in IPL 2015 but winning the next seven out of eight matches not only got them a breakthrough in the top four but also pushed them to the second spot in the table. Rohit Sharma’s men drubbed MS Dhoni-led CSK in the Qualifier 1 and the final to lift their second IPL title.

West Indies batter Lendl Simmons played an integral role as an opener with 540 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 122.44, including six 50-plus scores. Ace bowler Lasith Malinga picked 24 wickets in the title-triumph campaign.

2016

mi2.jpg (628×355)

Mumbai Indians finished fifth in the league stage in IPL 2016. They lost to Gujarat Lions in their final league game and missed those two points that would have at least pushed them in the top four. Captain Rohit Sharma was the highest run-getter in that season with 489 runs, while left-arm pace bowler Mitchell McClenaghan claimed the most wickets (17) for the team.

2017

Mumbai Indians were the table leaders of IPL 2017 with 10 victories in 14 matches and 20 points on the board with a +0.784 net run rate (NRR). But one thing that became a stumbling block was Steve Smith’s Rising Pune Supergiant.

RPS defeated Mumbai three times in the season, including a 20-run win over them in the Qualifier 1 at their home venue – Wankhede Stadium. MI were reduced to 129/8 in the final thanks to Krunal Pandya’s late fireworks (47 in 38 balls) that put them in a sizeable score. MI bowlers bowled in a terrific fashion to win a thrilling one-run game against RPS.

2018

mumbai-indians_806x605_51525523727.jpg (806×605)

MI missed the qualification in the playoffs after Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) defeated them by 11 runs in their final league fixture. It was a must win for them and those two crucial points would allow them to pip Rajasthan Royals in the fourth place on the table. Suryakumar Yadav scored the most runs (512) for the team and Hardik Pandya (18) picked the most wickets.

2019

MUMBAIINDIANSjpg (1200×675)

Mumbai Indians outplayed their rivals Chennai Super Kings in the 2019 IPL season to win their fourth IPL title and became the most successful side in the league. MI defeated CSK in all four meetings that season, including Qualifier 1 and the final.

Wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock was the highest run-scorer for the franchise (529 runs in 16 matches) and pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah was the leading wicket-taker (19 wickets in 16 matches) among the bowlers.

2020

ipl-2020-mi-1605081730.jpg (1200×675)

Mumbai Indians became only the second team in the history of the IPL to defend their title after Chennai Super Kings. They came with full guns against their poor track record in the UAE in IPL 2014. Just like in 2019 against CSK, MI defeated Shreyas Iyer’s Delhi Capitals in four matches to lift their fifth IPL trophy.

With 516 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 145.76, Ishan Kishan became the leaduing run-scorer of MI in IPL 2020, while Jasprit Bumrah (27 wickets) ended as the team’s highest wicket-taker for the third time and second consecutive time.

2021

966553-ezgif.com-gif-maker-2021-03-27t155905.594.jpg (768×432)

The Rohit Sharma-led side was in the top four with four wins in seven games before the IPL 2021 was halted amid Covid-19 pandemic. After the season was moved from India to UAE for the second leg, MI crumbled its position in the table and could manage only three wins out of seven games to finish at fifth spot.

2022

1065284-mi.jpg (1280×720)

For the first time in the history of the IPL, Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the points table and that also in a 10-team tournament. The five-time IPL winners endured their worst IPL edition in the previous 15 campaigns.

With the unavailability of England speedster Jofra Archer, MI’s inexperienced bowling unit even with the presence of Jasprit Bumrah faced the wrath of the opposition batters. Ishan Kishan (418) finished as the highest run-scorer in the season and Bumrah picked the most wickets (15).
