She was born on 28 September 1996 in Bryan, Texas, U.S. McCowan started her basketball life at Brenham High School. She then moved to college basketball at Mississippi State University in 2015. During her college career, she won the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2016 and the SEC Sixth Player of the Year award in 2017. She also got two prestigious awards for her college performance - Naismith Defensive Player of the Year in 2018 and Gillom Trophy in 2019. In = 2019, McCowan also became SEC Player of the Year.

In 2019, McCowan was selected 3rd overall by the Indiana Fever in the WNBA draft. In the first season, she made it to the WNBA All-Rookie Team selection by averaging 10.0 points per game. After three complete seasons playing as an Indiana Fever player, she moved to the Dallas Wings in 2022. As of September 7, 2024, she is averaging 11.5 points, 1.5 assists and 8.1 rebounds per game.
