They were led by legendary coach Eddie Gerard and star players like Nels Stewart, Hooley Smith who contributed to the team, making it one of the most successful franchises in the NHL during its tenure.

Montreal Maroons Stanley Cup History

The Montreal Maroons claimed two Stanley Cups, first in the 1925-1926 season and secondly in the 1934-35 season respectively.

Quickly after their establishment, the Maroons became popular due to their fierce performance on the ice. They won the Stanley Cup trophy in their second season by defeating the Victoria Cougars, solidifying their status in the league. Nels Stewart nicknamed “Öld Poison” contributed to the team in goals and won Hart Memorial Trophy as the Most Valuable Player.

The second cup they won in the 1934-1935 season was the 18th NHL season. Nine teams played 48 games and the Montreal Maroons defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs in three games in the Stanley Cup Finals. However, the Maroons faced financial problems during the Great Depression. They underwent some significant changes in 1935, changing the color of their jerseys to blue and white to boost interest.

Unfortunately, the move did not work and they continued to struggle both on and off ice. They officially stopped their operation in 1938 and played their last game on March 17, 1938, marking the end of their NHL journey. Despite their short tenure, they left an incredible mark in NHL history with two Stanley Cups and a legacy of strong players and coaches. Most of the Maroons players were sold to other teams in the league or washed out of the league altogether.
