Carter graduated from Timberview High School in 2017. She was also a member of the USA U18 national team in 2016, winning a gold medal. She began her college basketball career at Texas A&M, where during her sophomore year she became the fastest Texas A&M player to score 1,000 points, achieving this milestone in just 45 games. Over her collegiate career, she played 88 games, scoring 1,983 points with an average of 22.5 points per game and recording 368 total rebounds. Additionally, she was a member of the Pan American Games team in 2019 and the FIBA U-17 World Cup team in 2017.

Carter started her WNBA career with the Atlanta Dream as the 4th overall pick in the second round of the 2020 WNBA Draft. She was selected for the WNBA All-Rookie Team. During the 2022 WNBA season, Carter was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks. She signed a contract with the Chicago Sky for the 2024 WNBA season. As of September 2024, she has played 79 games and scored 1,129 points in her WNBA career.
