The 2012 MVP, Tina Charles is considered one of the best centers in the history of the WNBA. She is the second-highest scorer in WNBA’s history with over 7500 points and is close to breaking the all-time rebounds record of Sylvia Fowles. She has played over 400 matches in her WNBA career for multiple franchises and averages 17.9 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.0 blocks per game as of September 2024.

Charles was drafted as the first overall pick by the Connecticut Sun in the 2010 WNBA Draft. Since being drafted, Charles has made eight All-Star appearances, nine All-WNBA teams and four WNBA All-Defensive teams in her career. In the 2024 season, Charles scored the first-ever triple-double in her career.

Tina Charles College

Tina Charles joined the University of Connecticut and played college basketball for the Connecticut Huskies under the long-term head coach Geno Auriemma. She won awards and trophies at both conference and national level during her time with the Huskies. She played 152 matches and averaged 15.4 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 2.0 blocks per game in her college career.

In her freshman season (2006-07), Charles made 36 appearances and averaged 12.7 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game. She finished with the fourth most rebounds (296) and the third most blocks (81) in the Big East conference and made the All-Big East second team and the Big East All-Freshman team. She also won the Conference Rookie of the Year as well as the USBWA Rookie of the Year. She played in the NCAA Tournament and lost in the Elite-Eight against Louisiana State.

In her sophomore year (2007-08), Charles dominated the Big East conference, winning the regular season championship as well as the Conference tournament championship. She averaged 14.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.8 blocks per game and made the All-Big East first team and AP All-American third team. She played in the NCAA Tournament and lost in the Final Four against Stanford.

In her junior year (2008-09), Charles won the treble, winning the NCAA Tournament, regular season championship and the Conference tournament. She averaged 16.5 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game and made the All-Big East first team and AP All-American first team. She was also named the NCAA Most Outstanding Player for leading the Huskies to the National title.

In her senior year (2009-10), Charles had her first 700+ points and 350+ rebounds season which was also the first in UConn’s history until Napheesa Collier recorded 792 points and 411 rebounds in the 2018-19 season. She averaged 18.2 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game and made the All-Big East first team and AP All-America first team. She also won several Player of the Year awards like the Naismith Award, Big East POY, AP POY and the USBWA POY. She also won her second consecutive National championship and made the NCAA All-Tournament team.

Tina Charles played high school basketball for Christ the King High School in Middle Village, New York. She won the 2006 Gatorade National Player of the Year, McDonald's National Player of the Year (2006), USA Today National Player of the Year (2006)and the WBCA National Player of the Year award (2006) and was listed as one of the best college prospects in 2006.
