IPL 2024 Team Owners


Ownership of a sports team has to do a lot right from recruiting players, coaching staff, crew members, budgeting, investment, preparing auction strategies and media interactions.


The functioning of franchise and major decisions involved in cannot go ahead without the nod of the team owners just like in any other organistation.


To own an IPL team is not a piece of cake. More than the internal and external affairs the global reputation is at the fore. There have been many changes in the ownership of franchises who have played since the inception of IPL in 2008. But there are also some owners who aren't replaced and still continue to run their teams in the cash-rich league.


Let's take a look at the owners of the 10 teams in IPL 2024 below.


Mumbai Indians IPL 2024 Owners


The Reliance Group headed by Indian business tycoon Mukesh Ambani owns the most successful IPL team. Indiawin Sports Private Limited, a Reliance Industries-owned company, owns and operates Mumbai Indians.


Nita Ambani, the wife of Mukesh Ambani is the co-owner of the franchise. Aakash Ambani, the eldest son of Nita and Mukesh, is the other co-owner of the five-time IPL champions.


Nita and Aakash have always been active in the operations and other functions of the team. The owners of Mumbai Indians own three more sister franchises in other leagues, including a women's team in the Women's Premier League.


Chennai Super Kings IPL 2024 Owners


CSK is owned by India Cements Limited through the Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited holding company. The Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited was formed in December 2014 and gained the team rights from its parent company, India Cements. Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited is registered as a non-governmental company.


Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president N Srinivasan, who is the Vice Chairman and Managing Director at India Cements, is the key decision-maker in the franchise.


Kolkata Knight Riders IPL 2024 Owners


The ownership of KKR is divided between two groups with renowned Indian actor Shah Rukh Khan-owned Red Chillies Entertainment having 55% stakes in the franchise. The Mehta Group headed by Jay Mehta and Juhi Chawla have the other 45% ownership of the team.


SRK is the iconic face of the team and the management and operations, including auction strategie, are mostly taken care by the Mehta Group.


Rajasthan Royals IPL 2024 Owners


The Rajasthan Royals has seen changes in the ownership pattern over the years. As of 2023, Manoj Badale's Emerging Media IPL Ltd. holds the majority stake of the franchise (65%). RedBird Capital Partners, which is based in New York, acquires 15% ownership in the franchise. Garry Cardinale is the founder of RedBird Capital Partners and also the face of the group when it comes to represent Rajasthan Royals. Lachlan Murdoch from Fox Corporation is the other shareholder of the Rajasthan Royals but his share isn't disclosed yet.


Sunrisers Hyderabad IPL 2024 Owners


Sun Group owned by Kalanithi Maran owns the Hyderabad-based franchise since Deccan Chargers was terminated in 2012. Kavya Maran, who is the daughter of Kalanithi, is the co-owner of the franchise and seen in most of the public events, including raising the bids at the IPL auction. Kavya oversees the team operations from 2020.


Gujarat Titans IPL 2024 Owners


Gujarat Titans was one of the two franchises that entered IPL 2022 after the Indian cricket board aimed toward extending the lucrative league back to its 10-team tournament format. CVC Capital Partners, a British private equity and investment advisory firm, purchased the franchise for a whopping bid of INR 5625 crore in October 2021.


Royal Challengers Bangalore IPL 2024 Owners


Royal Challengers Bangalore is owned by United Spirits Limited (USL), subsidiary of the Diageo Group company. Prathmesh Mishra took over the role of RCB chairman from Anand Kripalu in July 2021. They also bought stakes in the Women's Premier League with a franchise worth INR 971 crore.


Delhi Capitals IPL 2024 Owners


The ownership of the Delhi outfit is divided within two groups. The GMR Group (Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao) and the JSW Group (Jindal South West) have equal shares in the Delhi Capitals.


Parth Jindal, who is the director of JSW Sports, is the chairman of the Delhi Capitals. Parth looks after the auction process not only in IPL but also for the sister franchises of Delhi Capitals in Women's Premier League and overseas T20 leagues. Parth runs the operations along with business person Kiran Grandhi, who is the CEO and MD of GMR Group.


Punjab Kings IPL 2024 Owners


Punjab Kings have four owners in the IPL. Mohit Burman (Dabur), Ness Wadia (Wadia Group), Preity Zinta (PZNZ Media) and Karan Paul (Apeejay Surrendra Group) are the co-owners of the Punjab-based franchise.


Burman owns 46% of KPH Dream Cricket Pvt. Ltd, the owner of the Punjab Kings cricket team. Preity and Wadia have an equal share of 23% while Paul has 8% stakes in the franchise.


Lucknow Super Giants IPL 2024 Owners


The Sanjiv Goenka-owned RPSG Group won the rights to acquire a franchise in Lucknow with a bid of Rs 7090 crore in October 2021. RPSG Group previously owned the Rising Pune Supergiant team in the IPL during the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
