Casper Ruud was born on December 22, 1998, in Oslo, Norway, to Christian Ruud and Lele Cathrine Ruud. Christian is a former tennis player and his son’s coach as of May 2025. Ruud began playing tennis at the age of four with his father.
During his junior year, Ruud made it to the semifinals of the 2015 Wimbledon and 2016 French Open in the boys' doubles category with Miomir Kecmanović. He acquired the No.1 ranking in the junior category on January 4, 2016, thus becoming the first Norwegian player to achieve the feat. Ruud played his maiden ATP Challenger tournament (Copa Sevilla) in September 2016, registering a win over Taro Daniel in the final.
