WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event History
Origins and Popularity (1985-1992)
Saturday Night's Main Event debuted on May 11, 1985, airing on NBC in the late-night slot traditionally filled by Saturday Night Live. The show was created by Vince McMahon and produced by Dick Ebersol, capitalizing on the success of earlier WWF specials on MTV. The program featured high-stakes matches between top stars, including Hulk Hogan, André the Giant, and Randy Savage, drawing massive audiences. A March 1987 episode featuring Hogan and André drew an unprecedented 11.6 rating, marking it as one of the highest-rated shows in American television history.
The show aired infrequently but consistently featured high-profile matchups that were seldom seen on regular television. Throughout its original run, SNME aired a total of 31 episodes, with its last airing in October 1992. The show's popularity waned in the early '90s, leading to its cancellation by NBC. Towards its end, the show also briefly aired on Fox Sports.
Revival in WWE (2006-2008)
Saturday Night’s Main Event saw a brief revival from 2006 to 2008, returning with several specials that continued to highlight big-name wrestlers and championship bouts. The show featured five editions this time with names like John Cena, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Batista, Kane, Edge, and other big superstars entering the squared circle on Saturday Night.
Current Revival (2024)
In 2024, WWE announced another revival of Saturday Night Main Event. The show was announced to take place from Uniondale, New York, at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. This is the same venue where the first-ever Saturday Night Main Event took place in 1985. It is a simulcast and is set to air on both Peacock TV and NBC.
