The 33-year-old Dagestani fighter became the UFC lightweight champion, per his former coach Abdulamanp Nurmagomedov’s plan. As an appreciation gesture towards Nurmagomedov and his son Khabib Nurmagomedov, Islam Makhachev badged his lightweight belt on ‘The Eagle’ at UFC 280 after submitting Charles Oliveira in the second round. Makhachev made his professional mixed martial arts debut on August 1, 2010, in a promotion called Tsumada Fighting Championship and won the bout via a unanimous decision. Since then, he has earned his way into the Ultimate Fighting Championship by competing in various other promotions, namely the M-1 Challenge, Lion’s Fights, Siberian Fighting Championship, and Pro FC. Makhachev was on an eleven-fight undefeated win streak before making his debut in the UFC.

For his octagon debut, Islam Makhachev faced Leo Kuntz at UFC 187 in Las Vegas. Makhachev won the bout via a rear naked choke submission at 2:38 in the second round. The fight took place on May 23, 2015, and Makhachev turned his MMA record into an undefeated 13-fight win streak. Moreover, he made his third title defense against the former UFC interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier at UFC 302 on June 1, 2024.

Islam Makhachev lost to Adriano Martins at UFC 192 via knockout at 1:46 in the first round. The fight took place at UFC 192: Cormier vs. Gustafsson on October 3, 2015, and was Makhachev’s second fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

How many times did Makhachev lose?

Islam Makhachev has only lost once in his professional MMA career. He had his first and only loss to date against Adriano Martins via knockout at UFC 192. Starting his career in 2010, Makhachev was on an undefeated twelve-win streak; he lost to Martins at UFC 192.

However, ever since his first and only loss, the UFC lightweight champion has not lost in any of the fights till now. Islam Makhachev is currently on a fourteen-fight win streak, including two championship bouts. He earned his shot at the lightweight title with a ten-fight win streak and fought the former champion Charles Oliveira for the vacant championship. Makhachev was able to submit the Brazilian who has the record of the most number of submissions in the promotion. Later, the Dagestani also made two title defenses against Alexander Volkanovski and won the bouts via a unanimous decision, and knockout, respectively. His last fight was a win against Dustin Poirier at UFC 302.
