Evgeni began his hockey journey in his hometown Magnitogorsk, Russia, with the Metallurg Magnitogorsk team. He was an influential player in both junior and senior teams. Evgeni's career took a turn when he was selected in the 2004 NHL Entry draft as the second overall pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
