Mark Stone is a Canadian professional ice hockey left winger who is currently serving as the captain of the Vegas Golden Knights in the National Hockey League. He was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the 6th round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. During the 2014-2015 NHL season, Stone was placed among the top NHL scoring rookies, contributing 64 points. His stellar contribution earned him the nomination for the Calder Memorial Trophy.


He started his hockey career with the Winnipeg Thrashers in Manitoba Midget ÁAA'Hockey League. Stone won the Telus Cup in 2008 with them as the top scorer and transitioned to the major junior level with the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League. He played four seasons in the WHL and his highest scoring season was the 2011-12 season where he scored 41 goals and 123 points with the Wheat Kings.

Mark Stone’s NHL Journey

Stone started his NHL journey with the Ottawa Senators on April 21, 2012, during playoffs against the New York Rangers. He made his regular season debut on March 6, 2013. Stone scored his first NHL goal on January 4, 2014, in a game against the Montreal Canadiens. His standout performance in 2015 led him to be nominated for the Calder Memorial Trophy. He then signed a three-year extension contract with them in June 2015.


After the completion of his contract, Stone was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights in 2019, signing an eight-year-long contract with them for $76 million. He finished the 2018-2019 season with 5 goals and was a finalist for the Frank J. Selke Trophy.


In the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs, he scored his first hat trick. Nonetheless, the Golden Vegas Knights were eliminated from the playoffs by the San Jose Sharks. The following year 2019-2020, the Vegas Knights managed to reach the Western Conference Finals but they lost against the Dallas Stars.


In 2021, Stone was named captain of the Vegas Golden Knights. In the regular season, they performed well but were defeated by the Montreal Canadiens in the semifinals where Stone faced criticism. He suffered back problems during the 2021-22 season, limiting him to play only 37 games.


Stone returned to the ice in May 2022 after recovering from his injury but unfortunately, he again suffered an injury on February 12, 2023. Despite the doubts about his performance, Stone stood out in the 2023 Stanley Cup, contributing to the Vegas Golden Knights win in the finals. He scored a hat trick in the final game and finished fourth for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs.
