Peter MacDougall

Peter MacDougall, a Lumsden-born NHL referee, is currently officiating in the National Hockey League (NHL). Born into a hockey legacy, his father, Kim MacDougall, was drafted by the Minnesota North Stars and played one NHL game. Peter MacDougall debuted as an official during a game between the Colorado Avalanche and Dallas Stars in 2017 and has presently officiated in over 300 NHL games.

Peter MacDougall's roots in hockey trace back to his time as a left-wing player for the under-18 Regina Pat Canadians and later the SJHL’s Weyburn Red Wings from 2003 to 2006. After four seasons at Canisius College in Buffalo, he embarked on a two-year professional career with the Southern Professional Hockey League’s Columbus Cottonmouths. MacDougall's transition to officiating began during an NHL exposure camp in Toronto while still playing for Cottonmouths. He worked in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), where he learned his craft before joining the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). MacDougall later joined the American Hockey League (AHL) and officiated 74 games while there. He received a minor league referee contract from the NHL in the summer of 2016.

MacDougall celebrated his NHL debut on April 8, 2017, and described it as one of the best days of his life. He was later rewarded with full time NHL referee status before the 2019-20 season. Expressing gratitude for the often-thankless nature of his occupation, MacDougall acknowledges the unique privilege of being part of the NHL, considering it the second-best job in the world. He also expresses his gratitude to his father, Kim MacDougall for his constant support.
