He was recognized as the highest-rated prospect by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau before the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. The Calgary Flames selected Bennett in the same draft as the fourth overall pick.

He debuted in the NHL on April 12, 2015, where he recorded his first assist after just 33 seconds against the Winnipeg Jets.
