Samuel Hunter Bennett is a forward for the Florida Panthers in the NHL, as of January 2025. He played minor hockey for the York-Simcoe Express and the Toronto Marlboros before being drafted ninth overall by the Kingston Frontenacs in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection. Over three seasons with the Frontenacs, he recorded 155 points in 128 games and earned OHL Second Team All-Rookie honors in his first season.

In 2014, Bennett was selected fourth overall by the Calgary Flames in the NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in 2015 against the Winnipeg Jets, recording his first career point on his first shift. Bennett scored his first NHL regular-season goal and playoff goal against the Vancouver Canucks. At 19 years and six months old, he became the youngest player in Flames history to score a hat trick and the third-youngest in NHL history to score four goals in a single game.

Where did Sam Bennett get traded to?

According to Flames Nation, Sam Bennett was traded by the Calgary Flames to the Florida Panthers on April 12, 2021. The Flames included a 2022 sixth-round pick in the deal, and in return, they received a 2022 second-round pick and Swedish prospect Emil Heineman.

The trade was viewed positively by the Flames, especially since they were likely to lose Bennett in the upcoming Seattle expansion draft. It allowed Calgary to gain valuable assets in return, including a promising young player and a higher draft pick.

Sam Bennett Previous Team

According to the NHL, Sam Bennett's team before being traded to the Florida Panthers was the Calgary Flames. He played with the Flames from the start of his NHL career in 2014 until the trade in April 2021.

The Calgary Flames selected Sam Bennett with the fourth overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. After signing a three-year entry-level contract, he injured his shoulder during training camp and required surgery, sidelining him for five months. He returned to Kingston on February 21, 2015, and scored 24 points in 11 games.

Bennett made his NHL debut on April 12, 2015, and scored his first NHL goal against the Vancouver Canucks. On January 13, 2016, he scored four goals in a game against the Florida Panthers, becoming the youngest player in Flames history to achieve a hat trick. Bennett played seven seasons with the Flames, totaling 140 points in 402 games.
