Tom Wilson began playing hockey at the age of two in a homemade rink made by his father. He initially started as defenseman in the minors and later switched to a more active role by choosing to be a forward.


Wilson impressed his peers during his time at the Greater Toronto Hockey League during his final minor season, where he scored 44 goals and recorded 105 points across 77 games.
