How to register for IPL Auction 2022?

The registration for IPL Auction 2022 has not opened yet. However, interested and eligible players can register themselves for the mega auction once the BCCI opens the window and shares the link publicly for registration.

IPL Retention Rules

The retention is the most important thing about the IPL mega auction. Many teams often end up losing their star players because of the IPL retention rules. It is an advantage for the teams who need to press the reset button and form a fresh squad. However, the champion teams end up losing their superstars.

BCCI has set the following IPL Retention rules and salary cap for the eight existing franchises.

For 1 Player Retained:

Player NumberSalary (Total INR 14 crore)
1INR 14 Crore

For 2 Players Retained:

Player NumberSalary (Total INR 24 crore)
1INR 14 crore
2INR 10 crore

For 3 Players Retained:

Player NumberSalary (Total INR 33 crore)
1INR 15 crore
2INR 11 crore
3INR 7 crore

For 4 Players Retained:

Player NumberSalary (Total INR 42 crore)
1INR 16 crore
2INR 12 crore
3INR 8 crore
4INR 6 crore

Each team has an auction purse of maximum INR 90 crore. Depending on the number of players they retain, their auction purse will be adjusted accordingly.

Fans should note that the aforementioned salary cap is the minimum salary. If the franchise and the player agree to a deal for more or less than the suggested salary cap, whichever the amount higher will be cut from the purse.

For example, if Royal Challengers Bangalore retain Virat Kohli for INR 17 crore and they retain four players, then instead of 16 crore, 17 crore will be cut from their purse and a total of 43 crore will be deducted.

How many players can be retained in the IPL mega auction?

A. Generally, a team can retain 3 to 5 players before IPL Mega Auction. The number has changed many times. In 2011, it was 4, in 2014 it went up to 5, but in 2018, there were only 3 players retention allowed.

How many players can be retained in the IPL 2022 mega auction?

A. Ahead of IPL Auction 2022, the BCCI allowed the eight teams to retain a maximum of four players each from their IPL 2021 squads. The two new teams can pick three players each before the mega auction begins.

How many capped players can be retained in the IPL?

A. There are no upper limits for the number of capped players that can be retained for IPL Mega Auction 2022. Teams can retain a maximum of four players and all four can be capped.

How many overseas players can be retained in the IPL mega auction?

A. A maximum of two overseas players can be retained by the existing eight franchises before IPL Mega Auction 2022. The two new teams can draft a maximum of one foreign player each.

RTM rules in IPL Auction 2022

RTM is a popular term in IPL Auctions. It’s full form is Right to Match. When a team releases one of its players into the auction pool, the RTM card allows them to buy him back at his auction price.

For example, if Rajasthan Royals release Ben Stokes, and Sunrisers Hyderabad buy him for INR 10 crore at the mega auction. RR can use their RTM card to sign Stokes for INR 10 crore.

Before selling Stokes to SRH, the auctioneer will ask RR if they wish to use the RTM card.

How many RTM cards are there in IPL 2022?

A. The BCCI has not allowed the RTM cards this year, meaning there will be 0 (zero) Right To Match cards with the franchises at IPL Auction 2022.

IPL Replacement rules

The replacement rules in IPL are simple to understand. If a player gets injured, tests positive for COVID-19 or returns home due to personal reasons, then franchises can sign replacements. The replacements can only be the players who registered for the preceding IPL Auction and went unsold.

No player outside the auction pool can join any franchise as a replacement. Also, if the team does not have any spots for overseas players, they will not be able to sign an overseas replacement for an Indian player.

What are the replacement rules for injured players in IPL?

A. If a player gets injured during a match, practice session or off the field, IPL franchises can sign any player from the unsold list as his replacement, provided they meet the maximum limits of overseas players in the squad.

IPL Auction rules for uncapped players

The IPL Auction rules for uncapped players are almost the same as capped players. However, there is a major difference and that is the order of the auction as well as the base price.

Capped players have permission to set their base price upto INR 2 crore. However, uncapped players have permission to keep base price upto INR 40 lakh, as of 2021.

Talking about the auction order, the capped players go under the hammer first. The uncapped set comes after the capped names, meaning that the franchises use up a majority of their funds before the uncapped players go under the hammer at the IPL Auctions. There is no rule for signing a minimum number of uncapped players, but franchises often target uncapped names and try to nurture their talent.

IPL Auction 2022 rules for new teams

There are two big rules for the new teams, Lucknow and Ahmedabad. First is that they can sign a maximum of three players each, two Indians + one foreigner, before IPL Auction 2022.

The second rule is that they will have a purse of INR 90 crore like other teams, and when they buy players outside the auction, the auction purse will be adjusted accordingly.

How many rounds does the IPL mega Auction have?

The IPL Mega Auction will have a minimum of three rounds. There will be a lot of sub-categories in those rounds. The major divisions for the rounds will be - Capped Players, Uncapped Players and Unsold Players.

What is an accelerated auction in IPL?

The accelerated IPL Auction generally happens in the final phase of the event. It is a phase where the auctioneer quickly passes by the names if there are no bids. Franchises pick the unsold names whom they want to be auctioned again in the accelerated auction.

What happens to unsold players in the IPL auction?

The unsold players are free to play matches elsewhere. However, franchises remain in touch of the unsold players they are interested in so that they can rope them in if they need a replacement player.

Also, some unsold players join the IPL franchises as net bowlers to help them with their training.
