About Tokyo ATP Open

Tokyo ATP Open 2023 Introduction

The Japan Open is a men's tennis tournament hosted in the Ariake Tennis Forest Park in Koto, Tokyo (which was sponsored by Rakuten in 2022). Established in 1915, the All-Japan Championships eventually changed their name to the Japan International Championships.

Due to renovations being done at the Ariake Coliseum for the tennis tournaments at the 2020 Summer Olympics, the location was changed to the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza in 2018. Both men's singles and doubles events are part of the championship.

The 2023 Japan Open Tennis Championships, which will be held on outdoor hard courts, are also known as the Kinoshita Group Japan Open Tennis Championships due to sponsorship. It will be the 48th Japan Open, which is a 500-series tournament on the ATP Tour. It will take place in Tokyo, Japan, at the Ariake Coliseum from October 16 to October 22, 2023.

Tokyo ATP Open 2023 History

The first All-Japan Championships were held as a men's-only event in 1915. A women's event was introduced to the schedule in 1924.

Throughout its long history, the tournament has been primarily contested in Tokyo, although it has also been held in other places, including Osaka in 1933, 1935, 1937, and 1939. Up until the late 1960s, the tournament was also known as the Japan International Championships, after World War II.

The Japan Open included separate male and female tournaments from 1979 until 2008. After the Ariake Coliseum hosted the Pan Pacific Open, another professional women's tournament, this is no longer the case.

The Japan Open for women was a WTA Tour event up until 2014 before being reduced to an ITF Women's Circuit $100,000+H event. The women's tournament was abandoned in 2019. The men's tournament is part of the ATP Tour 500 tournament series.

The Japan Open, which took place between 1973 and 1989 as a part of the Grand Prix tennis tour under the name Tokyo Outdoor Grand Prix, was reorganized as the men's tournament with the introduction of the ATP Tour.
