Grand Theft Auto 5 was released in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

GTA 5 has become one of the most successful video games in history, and perhaps one of the best, since its debut in 2013. This isn't just because of sales figures, which put it in second place, but also because the game's profitability has been sustained owing to GTA online. As a result, it has remained relevant for more than a decade. It was so popular that Rockstar decided to develop a fresh version for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

GTA 5 plot and setting

The game is set in the year 2013, in the southern state of San Andreas, namely in the city of Los Santos and the rural portions of Blaine County. The game follows three heroes, Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton, and Trevor Philips, as they perform daring and profitable heists throughout the expansive city of Los Santos.

The story takes place nine years after a failed robbery in the fictional North Yankton village of Ludendorff. Michael Townley, a former bank robber, and his family have migrated to Los Santos under a new alias. Michael is enjoying a typical but dull existence until he meets Franklin Clinton, a criminal looking to advance in the Los Santos' underbelly, and unexpectedly meets Trevor Philips, the only other survivor of the Ludendorff bank robbery.

The three band together to pull off a daring robbery of the Union Depository and steal tens of millions of dollars in gold. However, they are taken advantage of by corrupt Feds, as well as countless clashes with other gangs and other criminals.

When did GTA 5 come out?

GTA 5 was officially revealed in October 2011 and was originally scheduled for a Spring 2013 debut, with posters touting the same. However, the game was launched in the Northern Hemisphere in the fall, with Japan following a month later. The "Enhanced" variant for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was released in June, followed by a PC release in 2015. When it was released, the game broke records by becoming the fastest-selling entertainment product in history.

It made $800 million on the first day alone, and $1 billion in the next three days. An "extended and enhanced" version for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S was originally scheduled for "late 2021," but was eventually published in March 2022.

What has changed in GTA 5 Expanded and Enhanced?

There are no new story chapters or gaming modes to be found in this update. Nevertheless, as announced, players will be able to select from a variety of aesthetic options that have never been offered on console before. Rockstar has added support for the DualSense controller's haptic feedback and adaptive trigger functions, allowing PS5 owners to experience better controller sensations. According to Rockstar, "additional sensations to weather effects, directional damage, bumpy road surfaces, explosions, and much more" have been introduced.

In addition, the game includes:

  • Mode of Fidelity - "designed for the greatest visual quality and aims for 30 FPS. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X offer native 4K resolution with ray tracing enabled in this mode, however, the Xbox Series S only supports upscaled 4K resolution."

  • Mode of Performance - "designed for the most efficient gameplay experience and targets 60 FPS. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X support upscaled 4K resolution in this mode, while the Xbox Series S supports 1080p resolution."

  • Performance RT mode - "a mix of the Fidelity and Performance modes that supports upscaled 4K resolution with ray tracing enabled and targets 60 frames per second" (this last one is not available on Xbox Series S).

What is Grand Theft Auto Online?

GTA Online, sometimes known as Grand Theft Auto Online, is a narrative online multiplayer action-adventure game created by Rockstar North and released by Rockstar Games. The game was first made freely available via Grand Theft Auto V on October 1, 2013. Since its initial release in 2013, Rockstar Games has regarded Grand Theft Auto Online as the series' primary multiplayer product, built in a constantly expanding world designed to increase in size and ambition over time.

Essentially, Rockstar has created an enormous theme park, for gamers, based on the dream of being an unshackled rich criminal in Grand Theft Auto Online. Players can perform daring heists in highly fortified casinos and on private islands rich in cocaine and gold; buy costly sports cars and race them on incredible Hot Wheels-style tracks; and even hang out with hip-hop legend Dr. Dre.

How many different editions does Grand Theft Auto Online have?

There are three different editions of Grand Theft Auto Online. The original edition, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, was discontinued on December 16th, 2021.
