Born in Shiyan, Hubei, Qinwen Zheng is a Chinese tennis sensation ranked World No. 7 as of October 2024. She lifted her maiden WTA singles title at the 2023 Palermo Open, defeating Jasmine Paolini in the final. As of 2024, she has won three singles titles, including the 2024 Palermo Open. Zheng's best Grand Slam included reaching the final of the 2024 Australian Open, losing to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka.

She also reached the quarterfinals of the 2024 US Open, where she again lost to Sabalenka. Another noteworthy win of Zheng includes winning the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games by defeating compatriot Zhu Lin. She finished semifinalist at the 2024 China Open and finalist at the 2024 Wuhan Open, losing to Muchnova and Sabalenka, respectively. Zheng played her maiden United Cup for China and helped them reach the quarterfinal before losing to Poland. She won the 2022 WTA Newcomer of the Year award.

Zheng clinched her fourth WTA title at the 2024 Japan Open, defeating Sofia Kenin by 7-6, 6-3. This victory secured her a spot in the 2024 WTA Finals for the first time in her career. She qualified for her first WTA Finals after defeating Barbora Krejčíková, Jasmine Paolini, and Elena Rybakina.

Qinwen Zheng Olympic Medal

Zheng became the first Chinese player to win the gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics. She defeated Croatian Donna Vekic 6-2, 6-3 in the final. With the win, she became the first Asian player to win a gold medal in Olympic singles. Zheng created the biggest upset by defeating World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. By registering a win against Swiatek she broke the Pole's 25-match winning streak at Roland Garros.

During her interview with ESPN, Zheng said she could finally rest after winning the gold medal in the Olympics. She added that in China, winning a gold medal in the Olympics is more important than winning Grand Slams. Zheng also said that her parents made huge sacrifices for her tennis career, and now she can proudly say that she has created history.

She flew to China after the 2024 Cincinnati Open, where she was welcomed by her father, Zheng Jianping, at the airport tarmac. Zheng accompanied the team of other Chinese players who won a medal to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.
