Born on June 17, 1980, Venus has been ranked world No. 1 by the Women's Tennis Association on three occasions, for a total of 11 weeks. She became the first African American woman to reach No. 1 ranking in the Open Era on February 25, 2002, and the second all time since Althea Gibson. Venus has seven Grand Slam singles titles to her name. She has also won 14 Grand Slam Women's doubles titles, all with her younger sister Serena Williams.
