Auston Matthews is an American center and captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League (NHL). After being selected first overall in the 2016 NHL draft, he scored four goals on his NHL debut for the Maple Leafs against the Ottawa Senators on October 12, 2016. He won the Calder Trophy after leading the rookies with 40 goals and 69 points in the 2016-17 season. He had multiple 40+ goal seasons and won the Hart Trophy in 2022 as the Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Matthews became the fastest Maple Leafs player to register 500 points and the first to score 40 goals in four straight seasons. Matthews signed a four-year, $53 million contract in 2023, as per reports. He scored his 300th goal and scored a hat-trick in the 2023-24 season opener. In 2024, Matthews became the 26th Maple Leafs captain and the first American-born captain. He scored 69 goals and joined nine players with multiple 60-goal seasons in 2024.
