Auston Matthews is a professional ice hockey center for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He serves as an alternate captain, as of Jan 2025. He was drafted first overall by the Maple Leafs in 2016. Matthews debuted against the Ottawa Senators, where Toronto lost. In his rookie season, he won the Calder Memorial Trophy.

In 2023, he signed a four-year, $53 million contract extension, making him one of the highest-paid centers in the NHL. Internationally, Matthews has represented Team USA. He won gold at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge. He also won two gold medals at the IIHF World U18 Championship in 2014 and 2015.
