Auston Matthews is a center and captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League (NHL), as of May 2025. Born in San Ramon, California, United States on September 17, 1997, Matthews grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona. He played both baseball and hockey as a child but chose hockey after watching the Phoenix Coyotes. He played for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (USNTDP) and Swiss team ZSC Lions before being drafted first overall by the Maple Leafs in 2016.
Matthews made his NHL debut for the Maple Leafs against the Ottawa Senators on October 12, 2016, making history by scoring four goals. He set a Maple Leafs rookie record with 40 goals and won the Calder Trophy in the 2016-17 season. He won his first Rocket Richard Trophy with 41 goals in the 2020-21 campaign and became the first American and Maple Leaf to score 60 goals in a season in 2021-22. He won his third Rocket Richard Trophy in four years in 2024.
