
Auston Matthews is a center and captain for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected first overall by the Maple Leafs in the 2016 NHL entry draft. Matthews, who earlier played for Swiss team ZSC Lions, became the second player after Alex Ovechkin to score 40 goals, earning the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's top rookie in 2017.
Matthews won the Rocket Richard Trophy as the NHL's leading goal-scorer with 41 goals in just 52 games in the 2020-21 season. In the 2021-22 season, he set a career high with 60 goals, becoming the first American-born player to lead the league in goals for a season.
