Malkin and Jon Ledecky acquired the rights of the team for $485M from Wang (previous owner), who retained a share of the franchise. Initially, they served as minority partners before formally announcing their control at the end of the 2015-1016 season.

The New York Islanders have gone through many ownership changes throughout its history. Charles Wang and Sanjay Kumar, former owners of the team, acquired ownership of the New York Islanders from Milstein and Gluckstern in 2000. Prior to that, Milstein and Gluckstern took control of the team in 1997 before purchasing the team from one of the original owners, John Pickett.
