Sean Avery is a former Canadian NHL player who played for the Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, and Dallas Stars. Avery led the NHL in penalty minutes during the 2003–04 and 2005–06 seasons and was often at the center of controversy, resulting in multiple waivers and a contract termination.

After retiring in 2012, Avery transitioned to the creative industry, working in fashion, modeling, acting, and running a restaurant. His memoir Ice Capades: A Memoir of Fast Living and Tough Hockey was published in 2017. Since 2019, he has hosted the podcast No Gruffs Given with Sean Avery.

In October 2022, Rhoda filed a temporary restraining order against Avery after an alleged domestic battery incident. She claimed Avery had been physically and emotionally abusive to her and their son. The restraining order was extended in July 2023 and remains in effect until September 2023, preventing Avery from having contact with Rhoda and their son.

Rhoda was granted full legal and physical custody of their child.
