He squared off against Matt Hamill on December 5, 2009, where he delivered a series of downward elbow strikes resulting in his disqualification in the first round of the bout. The move was considered illegal at the time of the fight due to which Jones suffered the first loss of his career.

The MMA unified rules were recently updated rules and the downward elbow strike has now been legalized. Jon Jones has expressed his wish since then that the only loss of his decorated career should be overturned to a KO win in his favor.
