Jordan Staal is a Canadian professional ice hockey player and the captain of the Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL as of 2025. Born on September 10, 1988, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, he began his hockey journey with the Thunder Bay Kings. He later played for the Peterborough Petes, helping them win the OHL championship in 2006. Following his junior career, Staal was drafted as the second overall pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

During his rookie year, Staal played 81 games and scored 42 points (29 goals and 13 assists), as per Hockey Reference. He was named to the NHL All-Rookie team and was also one of the finalists for the Calder Memorial Award. During the 2008-09 NHL season, Staal contributed with 49 points (22 goals and 27 assists) as the Penguins won the Stanley Cup. After spending six years with the Penguins, Staal was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes on June 22, 2012.
