Jordan Staal is the captain of the Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL, as of May 2025. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins first overall in the 2006 NHL Draft and signed a three-year, entry-level contract. In his rookie season (2006–07), he scored 29 goals and 42 points, finishing third in Calder Memorial Trophy voting. He scored his first NHL hat trick in February 2007 at 18 years old, setting the record for the youngest player to score a hat trick.

He helped the Penguins reach the Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 but lost to the Detroit Red Wings in six games. In the 2008–09 season, Staal helped the Penguins win the Stanley Cup against the Red Wings, contributing 2 goals and an assist in the finals. On June 22, 2012, Staal was traded to the Hurricanes and signed a ten-year, $60 million contract extension. In 2017, Staal was named co-captain of the Hurricanes alongside Justin Faulk. He became the sole captain in 2019 when Faulk left the team. Staal played his 1,000th NHL game in April 2021 and recorded his third career hat trick in 2022.
