Jordan Staal is the captain of the Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL. He began his NHL career with the Pittsburgh Penguins after signing a three-year entry-level contract in 2006. He made his debut in the 2006–07 season and scored his first NHL goal on October 12, 2006, against Henrik Lundqvist. That same season, he became the youngest player in NHL history to record a hat trick at 18 years and 153 days old.

Staal was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes on June 22, 2012, in exchange for Brandon Sutter, Brian Dumoulin, and the Hurricanes' 8th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft. He then signed a ten-year, $60 million contract with the Hurricanes on July 1, 2012, declining a similar extension from Pittsburgh.
