For fans who wonder how Europe’s best tennis players fare against players from the rest of the world, the Laver Cup has provided convincing answers in the recent past. It was first held in 2017 based on the idea to create a tournament that is tennis’ reply to the Ryder Cup in golf. The chance to see the likes of the Big Three - Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, fighting it out on the same side is one that few admirers of the sport would want to miss.

In fact, the Laver Cup was the brainchild of the company that manages Roger Federer, TEAM8. They came together with Brazilian businessman and ex-Davis Cup player Jorge Paulo Lemann, and Tennis Australia to organize the Laver Cup. The title was to honor tennis legend Rod Laver. The Australian legend remains to this day, the only player to have won all four grand slams in the same year on two separate occasions.

The 2022 Laver Cup was a monumental affair that saw fans worldwide shed tears seeing Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal cry courtside after their doubles tie. It was also the first time ever that Team World triumphed over Team Europe, which they did at the fifth time of asking. But the big question remains…

Will Roger Federer take part in the 2023 Laver Cup?

Unfortunately for tennis fans, Roger Federer will not be playing at the Laver Cup in 2023. The emotional moment in 2022 was due to his retirement from professional tennis. He had already committed to the decision as he wished to leave the sport in good health and with no more injuries.

However, fans of the Swiss maestro should not be disappointed. Federer will make an appearance this year at the tournament where he bid goodbye to his playing career. This will be to mark the one-year anniversary of his retirement. He will have the honor of flipping for the coin toss for the final match on the final day. Following this he will be interviewed by former world number one, Jim Courier. Viewers across the world will be expecting a candid conversation between the two icons.

How many times has Federer won the Laver Cup?

Roger Federer has won the Laver Cup on three occasions. He was a member of the winning Team Europe for the first three editions of the tournament in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Moreover, he has remained undefeated in singles matches at the Laver Cup, having a perfect 6-0 win-loss record.

Roger Federer’s doubles record is rather lopsided. He only won two of the six doubles matches played at the Laver Cup. Sadly, his last doubles match with Nadal ended in defeat as well. Even though form may have eluded him at the end, Roger Federer’s class will forever hold a special place for tennis fans.
