The Coyotes were founded on December 27, 1971, as the Winnipeg Jets in the World Hockey League. However, they joined the NHL on June 22, 1979 after the WHL terminated its operations.

They moved to Phoenix on July 1, 1996, and played by the name Phoenix Coyotes later, they changed their name to Arizona Coyotes on June 27, 2014. The Coyotes have played in various arenas, starting with America West Arena now Footprint Center in Phoenix from 1996 to 2003.

The following year, they played at Glendale's Gila River Arena now known as Desert Diamond Arena from 2003 to 2022. They have now moved to Mullett Arena Tempe. The majority owner of the team is Alex Meruelo and the general manager is Bill Armstrong. The mascot of the Arizona Coyotes is Howler the Coyotes. Howler, the Coyote-clad, was introduced on October 15, 2005, Howler wears jersey number 96, the year of the Arizona Coyotes foundation, and carries the "M" tag for Mascot on his jersey.
