Brent Burns is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman playing for the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League (NHL). Before joining the Hurricanes, he played for notable teams like the Minnesota Wild and San Jose Sharks.

The Minnesota Wild drafted Burns as the 20th overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He began his career as a right winger in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Brampton Battalion. After transitioning to defense under the guidance of Minnesota's coach, he made his NHL debut in 2003. During the 2006–07 season, he became a key player and signed a four-year contract extension. After being traded to the San Jose Sharks in 2011, he won the James Norris Memorial Trophy in 2017 and played pivotal roles in the Sharks' deep playoff runs. In international play, Burns has represented Canada in various tournaments, winning gold medals at the World Championships and the World Cup in 2016. He was also named the best defenceman at the 2015 World Championships.
