The Carolina Hurricanes are an NHL team based in Raleigh, North Carolina, and play home games at the Lenovo Center. They are part of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference. The franchise began in 1971 as the New England Whalers in the WHA. They won the 1972–73 Avco World Trophy and reached the finals again in 1978.
