The Carolina Hurricanes, also known as the Canes, are a professional ice hockey team that plays under the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference in the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was founded in 1971 as the New England Whalers in the World Hockey League. During its initial days, the team won the Eastern Division in each of its first three seasons and also won the WHA Championship once in 1973. However, after the WHA folded in 1979, the team joined the NHL and renamed itself as the Hartford Whalers. Later in 1997, they relocated to North Carolina and became the Carolina Hurricanes. The team is currently based in Raleigh, North Carolina, and plays its home games at PNC Arena.

The pinnacle of their success after relocating to Carolina arrived in the 2005-2006 season when they secured their first Stanley Cup under the leadership of coach Peter Laviolette and captain Rod Brind'Amour. Additionally, the Hurricanes have two Conference Championships and six Divisional Championships.

The 2006 Stanley Cup Finals featured the Eastern Conference's Carolina Hurricanes and Western Conference's Edmonton Oilers, where the Hurricanes secured the Stanley Cup by winning in seven games. This marks the Carolina Hurricanes’ only Stanley Cup win to date. The Hurricanes became the tenth post-expansion team and the first former WHA team to achieve the honour in 2006. Notably, the 2006 Stanley Cup victory was the first championship for the Carolina Hurricanes, but during their tenure as the New England Whalers, they were the inaugural WHA Championship winners in 1973.
