Jacob Markstrom, born January 31, 1990, is a Swedish professional ice hockey goaltender, playing for the New Jersey Devils in the NHL as of January 2025. Renowned for his butterfly style, Markstrom was drafted 31st overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2008 NHL Draft. He started his junior career at IK Sätra J18 in Sweden and gained recognition with Brynas IF, leading the league in save percentage and goals-against average in 2009–10. He began his NHL career with the Florida Panthers in 2011, playing his first game (loss vs. Devils) on January 23.

Markstrom earned his first NHL shutout with the Vancouver Canucks and achieved a career-best nine shutouts during the 2021–22 season with the Calgary Flames, earning him a Vezina Trophy finalist spot. He was instrumental in leading the Flames to the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2022. Markstrom joined the Devils in 2024.

Jacob Markstrom is the son of Lena and the late Anders Markstrom. He comes from a family deeply rooted in sports, especially in goalkeeping roles. His father, Anders, was a professional soccer goalkeeper who played for Hammarby IF and Gefle IF in Sweden's top league. His mother Lena Markstrom was a handball goalkeeper, as per NHL.com.

Anders Markström passed away on November 11, 2019, at the age of 59.

Jacob’s older brother, Tim Markstrom, also followed the goalkeeping path, playing soccer professionally in Sweden’s third tier until 2017. “People say goalies are weird; maybe we’re a weird family,” Jacob Markstrom joked in an interview with NHL.com.

Tim Markstrom, born on October 9, 1986, started with IK Satra. He progressed through clubs like Valbo FF, Umea FC, and Sandvikens IF. He also played for Hammarby IF and Gefle IF. He retired in 2023 after a 19-year career.

His younger sister, Ida, took a different route, playing as a defender instead of a keeper. “She didn’t get the family memo,” Jacob joked. Markstrom credits his family’s understanding of the mental pressures of being the last line of defense. “It’s a pressure position,” he explained. “You either save the day, or it’s your fault. But everyone in our family really enjoys the pressure.”

Markstrom is married to Amanda Ostervall. She is a Swedish abstract artist known for her creative and expressive art as per her Facebook profile. She showcases her work under the name "Amanda Ostervall Art," where she explores vibrant abstract themes. Jacob Markstrom and Amanda Östervall got married in a ceremony held at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel in Banff, Alberta, as per DH Sports.
