Jake Guentzel is an American professional ice hockey left winger currently playing for the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round, (77th overall) during the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.


Guentzel’s journey in hockey began in Omaha, Nebraska, where he was born. However, he spent his formative years in Woodbury, Minnesota. During his high school years at the Hill-Murray School in Maplewood, Minnesota, he played varsity hockey for two seasons. In 2012, his team finished second in the MN State Hockey Tournament. Following his successful high school career, Guentzel decided to continue his hockey journey at the University of Nebraska-Omaha after graduating.


This was followed by a memorable freshman season at Omaha, where he was named to the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team and NCHC All-Conference Rookie team honors. This led to an entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. However, on March 7, 2024, he was traded by the Penguins in exchange for Micheal Bunting, Ville Koivunen, Cruz Lucius, Vasili Panomaryov, and two conditional 2024 draft picks.
