Born on March 28, 1995, in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec, Drouin began his junior career with the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL, where he gained national recognition, including being named the CHL Player of the Year in 2013.

He also helped lead the Mooseheads to a Memorial Cup victory that year. Drouin was selected third overall in the 2013 NHL Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he began his professional career. After several seasons with the Lightning, he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in 2017, where he played for six years. In 2023, he signed with the Colorado Avalanche.
