Tocchet has achieved significant success both as a player and as a coach. He won the Stanley Cup for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992 where he played a crucial role in the finals. After his retirement, Tochhet continued to excel as an assistant and head coach.

In 2008, he was named as a head coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning and later he served as a head coach for the Arizona Coyotes from 2017 to 2021 where he witnessed his 100th win as head coach of the Coyotes in a 5–2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. Currently, Tocchet is serving as a head coach of the Vancouver Canucks.
