Born on May 21, 1995, Graves was drafted 110th overall by the New York Rangers in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He began his junior career with the Prince Edward Island Rocket in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and later played for teams such as the Charlottetown Islanders and Val-d'Or Foreurs.
