Intro
The Mexican Open, also known as the Abierto Mexicano Telcel, is an ATP Tour 500 series event that usually takes place in Acapulco during the last week of February.
Rafael Nadal won the men's singles title last season by defeating Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-4 in the final while Feliciano López and Stefanos Tsitsipas lifted the men's doubles title by triumphing 7-5, 6-4 over Jean-Julien Rojer and Marcelo Arevalo.
Nadal will not be defending his title this season but a number of top players will compete. These include Carlos Alcaraz, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud and Taylor Fritz.
History
The inaugural edition of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel took place in 1993, with Thomas Muster winning it by beating Carlos Costa in the final. The Austrian went on to win the next three editions of the tournament as well. Leonardo Lavalle and Jamie Oncins were the first men’s doubles champions, defeating Horacio de la Pena and Jorge Lozano in the final.
The Abierto Mexicano Telcel was introduced to the WTA Tour in 2001, with Amanda Coetzer winning the inaugural edition by beating Elena Dementieva in the final. The women’s tournament hasn’t been held since 2020, with Heather Watson being the last women's singles Champion.
Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer and Thomas Muster hold the record for the most number of titles at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel at four. Venus Williams, Amanda Coetzer, Flavia Pennetta and Lesia Tsurenko have each won the women’s singles tournament twice, which is the current record.
Dates & Venue
The Abierto Mexicano Telcel was held at the Club Aleman from 1993-1998 before shifting to the tennis court at the hotel Fairmont Acapulco Princess (now known as the Hotel Princess Mundo Imperial).
The tournament was shifted to the Arena GNP Seguros in Acapulco for last season and it is the venue for this year’s edition as well. The arena has a seating capacity of almost 10,500 spectators. It’s also really famous for its volleyball events.
The Abierto Mexicano will take place from February 27- March 3 2023.
