During his junior year at Myers Park, Maye set a school record with 3,512 passing yards and 50 touchdowns, leading his team to a conference championship appearance. His exceptional performance earned him All-Conference and All-District honors in basketball and the title of The Charlotte Observer's 2019 Male Athlete of the Year.

Despite not being able to play his senior season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Maye was named a 2020 Under Armour All-American, underscoring his potential as a standout athlete. He initially committed to play college football for Alabama in 2019 but later flipped his commitment to the University of North Carolina in 2020, where he continued to develop as one of the top quarterbacks in the country.
