Maria Sakkari is a Greek professional player born on July 25, 1995. She achieved a career-high singles ranking of No. 3 on March 21, 2022, and is ranked No. 8 by the WTA as of July 2024. She has won two WTA titles in her career so far, including the 2019 Morocco Open, and the 2023 Guadalajara Open.

Sakkari rose to fame after reaching the French Open semifinals in 2021, where she lost to Barbora Krejcikova in a tough three-set match. She also reached the semifinal of the US Open in 2021, where she lost against the eventual champion Emma Raducanu. She is the first women’s player from Greece who reached the semifinals at two majors.

Sakkari's other notable achievements include finishing as a semifinalist at the 2021 and 2022 WTA Finals. She started her current season by competing in team competition at the 2024 United Cup. She won all her matches in straight sets against Angelique Kerber, Leylah Fernandez and Daniela Seguel. In the 2024 season, she reached the final of Indian Wells, losing 6-4 6-0 to Iga Swiatek in the final.

Sakkari is a right-handed player who is coached by David Witt. Her game revolves around her strong first serve and powerful groundstrokes. Her tennis idols are Serena Williams, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. She reached the 2024 Miami Open quarterfinals and the 2024 Charleston Open semifinals.

Maria Sakkari Spartan Heritage

Maria Sakkari has Spartan heritage from her father, Konstantinos Sakkaris. Her mother, Angeliki Kanellopoulou, was a top-50 WTA player. In January 2021, Sakkari posted the premiere episode of 'Sparring with a Spartan' on her Instagram and spoke about how she takes inspiration from her upbringing. In an essay published in The Times, Sakkari wrote — “I am a Spartan through my father, so I take a lot of inspiration from my heritage and that enables me to stay tough and have a positive and strong mentality in whatever I am doing.”
